The beach is obviously the main attraction in Chaweng. Not only for the inviting water, the white fine sand and the surrounding coconut palm trees, but also for all vacation activities such as the water sports, afternoon beach dining and the tropical beach parties.
Big Buddha or Wat Phra Yai is a twelve meter tall Buddha figure built in 1972. It is located a few kilometers north of Chaweng, and easily accessed by motorbike or taxi. Please show the Thai Buddhists respect and wear proper clothes while visiting Big Buddha. The statue also includes a Suphannahong Boat and a Dharma Wheel, which both were finished in 2006.
Wat Plai Laem
Located between Big Buddha and Choeng Mon Beach. A very colorful temple with amazing paintings and statues. Well worth a visit! Bring a camera.
Chaweng Lake and Reggae Pub
The lake in Chaweng is located across the Beach Road (from the beach). It is partly surrounded by bars and clubs such as the famous Reggae Pub (a large legendary discotheque that originally was built with mostly bamboo). If you are into walking, a lakeside stroll is ideal. There are also regular outdoor aerobics classes here, if you feel that you need to work out more intensively.
Chaweng Lake Market
At the other side of the lake (closer to the beach) Thai locals often arrange a large market where they sell shoes, clothes, food, music, DVD's and souvenirs etc.
Bar Ice Samui
Bar Ice Samui is one of only few bars of its kind in Asia. Almost everything inside the bar is made of ice and the temperature is about minus 7 degrees Celsius. This ice bar is open every day from 4 PM - 2 AM and it is located at the north end of the Chaweng lake. Children are allowed inside until 10 PM.
Muay Thai - Thaiboxing
Chaweng Stadium is located close to Laem Din Market, Chaweng Lake and Reggae Pub. Local Thai boxers and some farangs are showing their fighting skills here 2-3 nights a week. Live commentator and there is food plus drinks for sale.
Chaweng offers the best shopping on Koh Samui and nowadays you can find all kind of shops and stores in the area. There are a number of skilled tailors, who will sew up suits, shirts, dresses, winter coats and jackets.
There are also several sport shops (such as "Sport Stadium" in central Chaweng, next to Via Vai restaurant), beauty salons, clothing and fashion stores along the Beach Road. The original brands are found inside the stores and the copies outside on the Beach Road in street stalls.
Do not forget to bargain when you are buying from the street stalls. Often a discount up to 40-50% of the original price is possible. In shops and stores bargaining is not always possible or accepted though, but it is often wise to try, especially with the tailors.
Photo Shops and Opticians
Along the Beach Road there are also several photo shops that offer digital prints and portrait / passport photography. There are also many opticians and eyeglass shops which offers everything from fashion brand sunglasses (Ray Ban, Oakley, Armani, Dolce Gabbana, Boss, DKNY, Versace and so on) to ordinary eyeglasses and contact lenses (often to a very affordable price).
You'll find street stalls with copy DVD movies, music CDs and video games and there are also a few gold, silver and jewelry stores found in the area. Thai traditional handicrafts and souvenirs as thai silk, paintings and carved soaps are also found along the Beach Road.
Several 7-Eleven, Family Mart (a Japanese chain) and small locally owned convenience stores are found almost everywhere in Chaweng.
Supermarkets - Hypermarkets
Tops Market Place
Tops is a larger food store in central Chaweng, just north of McDonald's, near the beach. Tops offers a rather wide range of local and imported food products and articles. If you are looking for food and products produced outside of Thailand, we would like to recommend Tops.
Tesco Lotus is a much larger shopping center, which is located between Chaweng and Bo Phut, a little north of Samui Bangkok Hospital. In Tesco Lotus, you'll find food, clothing, household appliances, electronics, toys, office equipment, furniture, tools and car accessories etc. The prices are often rather reasonable and Lotus has become many of the islanders' favorite shopping center.
Located in the same building as Tesco Lotus. Home Pro has all kinds of electronics tools and household objects such as: refrigerators, freezers, fans, air conditioners, TV, DVD, music, household appliances, vacuum cleaners etc.
A wholesale, self serviced store located next to the Main Road, north of Tesco Lotus, but on the opposite side.
Another hypermarket north of Chaweng close to Bandon Hospital. Food, groceries, household equipment and some clothing is for sale here.
Laem Din Market
The Chaweng local market is a traditional Thai outdoor market with fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, shellfish, meat and some cheap clothes, household products etc. It is located south of the Chaweng Lake.
